What are the benefits of attending a Basic Driver Improvement Course?

If you’ve received a traffic ticket in Florida, it’s essential to ensure that this minor violation doesn’t affect your driving record, as it could lead to higher insurance rates. Completing the required course will prevent any points from being added to your driver’s license for the violation. Furthermore, insurance companies are not allowed to increase your premium or refuse to renew your policy solely because of a non-criminal traffic infraction.

Why take Approved National Driving School BDI Online?

When you enroll in the Approved NDS Basic Driver Improvement online course, you won’t need any special software to access your classes. You can complete your coursework using your current web browser. This program allows you to attend classes conveniently, without having to miss work or travel to a physical location for lectures.

FAQ and More Information about BDI (TCAC)

Do I need to notify the Clerk of the Court if I choose traffic school?

Yes. If you plan to attend traffic school for a Florida traffic citation, you must notify the Clerk of the Court in the county where the ticket was issued. This is usually done by submitting the affidavit or election form included with your citation.

Some counties also allow notification in person, by phone, online, or by fax. Because procedures vary, you should contact the Clerk of the Court directly to confirm their requirements and deadlines.

What happens after I complete the course?

After successfully completing the course, your certificate of completion will be emailed to you. All course completions are reported electronically to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV).

Do I need to submit my certificate to the court?

In most cases, course completion is reported directly to the DHSMV. However, if you were court-ordered by a Judge or Magistrate to attend a driver improvement course, you must notify the court after completing the course and follow any additional instructions provided.

The Clerk of the Court will inform you if any documentation is required.

Who is eligible to take a Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) course?

If you received a citation for a non-criminal moving violation and do not hold a Commercial Driver License (CDL), you may be eligible to take a BDI course in lieu of points being assessed on your driving record.

Eligibility is determined by the Clerk of the Court and applicable Florida law.

What does court-ordered attendance mean?

Court-ordered attendance means a Judge or Magistrate required you to complete a 4-hour driver improvement course, typically after contesting a traffic citation. If this applies to you, you must complete the course and comply with all court instructions.

What is a Traffic Collision Avoidance Course (TCAC)?

The Traffic Collision Avoidance Course (TCAC) is required when the Florida DHSMV determines a driver must complete a BDI course due to certain circumstances, such as:

  • Two or more crashes within a two-year period
  • Crashes involving injuries

Drivers in this situation will receive a notice directly from the DHSMV.

What violations require completion of a BDI course?

You may be required to complete a BDI course if you receive a DHSMV notice related to serious traffic violations, including:

  • Reckless driving
  • Road racing
  • Passing a stopped school bus
  • Running a red light
Can I receive an auto insurance discount for completing this course?

Florida law allows insurance companies to offer a discount of up to 10% for completing a DHSMV-approved BDI course. Discount availability and eligibility are determined solely by your insurance provider.

You must obtain approval from your insurer before enrolling. This course is not a mature driver course.

Who should I contact if I have questions about my ticket or court requirements?

For questions regarding your citation, deadlines, or court requirements, contact the Clerk of the Court in the county where the ticket was issued.

For questions about course completion or certificates, please contact our team.

Before starting the Approved NDS Basic Driver Improvement course, you must request approval from the relevant court. The court will provide you with a deadline to complete the course.

From the state:

“In order to qualify for a Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) course to eliminate the assessment of points, drivers must voluntarily elect this option within 30 days (section 318.14 (4), Florida Statutes) from the citation date and, prior to attending the course, drivers must inform the clerk of court in the county where the citation was issued of this election. Drivers must also pay an election fee to the clerk of court in the county where the citation was issued. Drivers may not elect to take the BDI, in lieu of points, after the initial 30-day period from the citation date.”
